Events at The Conserving the Future have started to unfold in a BIG way, inspiring over 1,000 wildlife enthusiasts to reflect upon both the recommendations in the vision document and their contributions to the U.S. Refuge System thus far. Two of my favorite gatherings were the 1) welcome reception and 2) lecture by world renowned Oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle.
After a round (or two, or three) of delicious hors d’oeuvres, Greg Siekaniec, the Refuge System Chief welcomed the crowd to the conference by highlighting the opportunities available to attendees throughout the week. The new Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Dan Ashe, received a warm, standing ovation for the exciting and important role he will play in implementing the recommendations that emerge during the conference. The welcome reception ended with a set of culturally diverse dancing performances, including Celtic, Native American, and Chinese Folk.
This morning, Dr. Sylvia Earle gave an incredibly thoughtful and educational speech on the importance of the planet’s water systems and the sea life thriving within. She delighted all those in attendance by invoking catchy one-liners such as, “No Child Left Dry,” and “Fishing with a trawl is like hunting with a bulldozer for songbirds and squirrels.” Her passion for environmental education, bravery (as indicated by her dangerous oceanic explorations), and humility inspire me to serve as a noble member of the next generation of conservation leaders.
