Conservation Delivery

Public Group active 19 hours, 55 minutes ago

Delivery of conservation and the benefits of nature – often called “ecosystem services” – are at the very heart of the National Wildlife Refuge System’s mission and accomplishments.

This group focuses on the variety of issues from water quality to fire management to fighting invasive species – all in the context of a changing climate.

The rate of population increase in the U.S. seems to be calculated incorrectly. I believe it should be 36% (111/309), not 74%. This rate is similar to the world rate of population increase (35%).

Thanks Khristi! Not sure where we got this percentage but I’ll check it out. Keep the comments coming!

Thanks again Khristi for the comment. The U.S. Census Bureau population projections website (http://www.census.gov/population/www/projections/files/nation/summary/np2008-t1.xls)call for an increase from 310 million today to 439 million in 2050. That is a difference of 129 million, or a 41.6% increase. We have changed the text to reflect this (a “nearly 42%” increase). Great catch!!! Keep them coming :-)

Page 2 of the draft vision document reads “The NWRS helps sustain a remarkable array of species: more than 700 varieties of birds, 220
mammals, 250 reptiles and amphibians, and 200 fishes.” The 200 fishes is drastically understated since 323 species have been recorded at Wake Atoll NWR alone.

Good catch- we adjusted the language…. There should be a new draft to review next month :-)
