We are now brainstorming strategies on how to implement our urban refuges recommendation. Do you have a strategy you would like the group to discuss?

Our group ideas so far: emphasize partnerships, convene a summit to define urban refuges

Another idea: create a separate FWS division for urban refuges. Should include remediation, restoration, and re-engagement.

Group discussion: we need to be forthright about the challenges of urban refuges. The document paints a pretty picture.

Some existing refuges are becoming increasingly urban, and may become urban refuges if population growth continues. Need to identify “refuges at risk” of being impacted by urbanization.

  • Profile Photo Bridget Fahey said 1 month, 4 weeks ago:

Revisit the 1991 Urban Refuges Policy. Address the issue of urbanization impacting existing refuges.

We are missing kids in rural settings too — let’s not forget this with a focus on urban refuges. Connecting with kids is a generation thing, not just an urban/rural issue.

Optimize green space — need to work for wildlife purposes at urban refuges.

Ecological Services is an important internal partner that we should work with for urban refuges. Environmental eduction and outreach needs, expertise, and staffing.

Vision document should include communication and coordination with other Federal agencies and other partners. With current budget situation, should work with other partners with experience in urban environmental education.

  • Profile Photo Bridget Fahey said 1 month, 4 weeks ago:

Broaden the urban refuge vision to include migratory birds partnerships.

Leverage resources for acquisition dollars. Some local acquisition $$ can protect the land but can’t staff it or do the education. We can work together to fill in the holes.
