Hi Jane, Thanks for the note! You are so lucky to have Shannon as your Refuge Manager – and, of course, you are welcome to tell her I said so! I keep hoping for more info about the livestreamed sessions for those of us who cannot afford to attend. Enjoy the conference and please say [...]

Hi Patrick, Thanks for the update – when will there be information on this site re: which sessions will be “livestreamed” for *virtual attendees*? Or will video be archived for later viewing, especially those of us on the West Coast? One of our former assistant managers, Shannon Smith is part of a panel on Wed. [...]

Great article and great changes to be making – it makes sense!

Does anyone know how I can find out more about the 3-E Initiative? I just came across this via the @USFWSPacific twitter stream.

I would like to sign up or register to have access to the virtual sections of the Conference in July. The link in the article about the conference *register* is not live. Is there another way to sign up?

You are already a member of the CtF community – no additional registration is needed to participate in the online conference.

I am concerned that by FWS *inviting* Friends groups to pay the entire cost of sending one representative to the Vision conference in Madison this summer, small Friends groups with limited financial resources will be unable to send a representative to the conference. Is there any information about the virtual participation available for Friends groups [...]

I have to agree with you, when this site started I was very involved. I really worked hard to get my PL and DPL to have me join them at the vision Conference but was never invited. I know we son’t have a lot of funds for travel and I’m only a Term employee but not only am I working to find a permenant nitch in the FWS but I AM the next generation of Refuge employee and never want to see the refuge system go by the wayside. I stopped posting because it seems like the more I posted the less I saw in the way of ”New” ideas, but more old Ideas overshadowing the new thougts and directions that were being posted here. If we want the Refuge system to grow and reach today’s youth then we have to be willing to go outside our comfort zone, spend the money, Lobby the president and congress for funding and make the Refuge system more technologically Savvy for today’s youth.

Hi Russell, Thank you so much for describing the ways you are helping kids love the out of doors! And I love the projects you have gotten to be part of! We need more young people like you who see the change it can bring to the lives of all kids, but especially those kids [...]

Thank you for pointing this omission out, Dean. From the point of view of a Friends’ member, the most frequent contact that the general public has with Refuges is the Visitors’ Center or, as in your case, a museum. It seems to me that if we want to encourage public support for the Refuge System, [...]

Excellent resource, Ann Marie – especially for Friends’ group members who are involved in creating both environmental education projects as well as being agents of outreach by their very nature! We need to know these things to do an effective job! I have learned so much these past few months from reading the resources available [...]

Yes, I agree Lisa! Excellent recommendation.

In reply to - Lisa Mayo posted an update in the group Relevance to a Changing America : Reading the discussions about social media and the Service reminded me of something I’d like to see changed in how the Service links to articles and press releases. Often on Twitter and Facebook, the Service will post an entry with a link that leads [...] · View

Hi Dave, Wow! Thank you for posting the information about the discovery garden. I love the concept and I am not surprised that kids love it to! And, I suspect more than a few parents probably love it and wish they could do a little discovering too! Kids need places to explore safely on their [...]

In reply to - Edward Lagace uploaded a new picture: Library go Packs.JPG These packs were purchased with grant monies and distributed through out the community. Hi Tracy,

Glad you too had a favorite place to return to ! I strongly believe that whenever possible, we need to create these kinds of places with children in mind. I think every Refuge should have a children’s ”WildWing” !

My Friends group in collaboration with our Refuge staff just completed the first phase of our children’s ”WildWing” on our Refuge. It is an observation deck over a fresh water pond that is built with both children’s safety needs and their natural curiosity in mind. It will be a place we use as a focal point to teach children about the environment of fresh water ponds. For us, it is a long-held dream come true!

My hope is that it will become a place children return to as adults because they spent time on it when they were young!

In reply to - Tracy Fischbach posted on the forum topic Tomorrow's Refuge Friends are today's children in the group Relevance to a Changing America : I like the idea of having places that children can return to. Betsy Burch started the forum topic Individual Refuge Twitter accounts rules in the group Profile PhotoRelevance to a Changing America:   8 months ago · View

Since this forum’s focus is to “…raise it’s place in the consciousness of Americans.” it seems the right place to ask why individual Refuges are not allowed to have twitter accounts which they use and monitor on their own. I was talking with our own Visitor Services person yesterday about how we could use Twitter [...]

Betsy – Upper Mississippi River NWFR in Region 3 has their own Facebook and Twitter accounts. It just recently happened. We had to put together a Management Plan and we related back to GPRA goals. Our SCEP student is teaching me how to be relevant in the social media world.

Well since this is so new to the Service, my guess is that the Regional Offices want to have control over the creation of the acounts for the time being. As with everything ”New” there are those who fear the change and those who accept and run with it. I think in time, individual refuges will be allowed to have and maintain their own FB and Twitter accounts as well as manageing their own web sites for their individual refuges. It’s just growing pains and it will all be worked out in time.
