In reply to: Kristen posted an update in the group Communications (Recommendations 14, 15) Just uploaded my comments onto the site. Its a good start, but we need to think about our target audiences a little more. Kristen […] ViewInteresting points, Kristen. I especially agree with two of your observations:
— “Experience does not necessarily equal future support. There are a host of defacto supporters already out there, who in theory believe that all public lands should be protected without having “experienced the wonders” of the Refuge System. This is an…[Read more] -
Bill O'Brian uploaded the file: Vision Communications Plan O'Brian comments 01-10-13.docx to Communications (Recommendations 14, 15) 1 year ago
I believe this plan contains pockets of good tips on how to communicate, but , as an overarching strategy for the Refuge System, I think it is too complex and too diffuse to be effective. We need to simplify our message, broaden our audience and clarify what the Refuge System brand is. Details in the attachment.

As we pass the conservation torch to the next generation, here’s a video worth watching. It’s journalist/author/historian David Maraniss — with whom I worked for years at the Washington Post — giving a commencement address at St. Norbert College near Green Bay, WI. David is the author of numerous excellent books, including ”When Pride Still [...]

Amplifying on what Paul Baicich said above, major advances that have happened in recent decades really should be included in the introduction section someplace, I think, and so should a direct mention that this is the first Refuge System-wide vision effort since “Fulfilling the Promise” effort in the late ’90s. All that this would require, [...]

Random thought regarding the goal of increasing minorities among those who work for and visit refuges: We should consider setting up formal alliances with historically black colleges and universities regarding Refuge System employment recruitment and refuge-visiting opportunties. Bill O’Brian started the forum topic Keeping NWRS website(s) current and accurate in the group Relevance to a Changing America: 3 years, 2 months ago

Right now, while the websites generally are helpful, they often contain out of date and/or incorrect information. I believe the vision [...]

Bill, that is an awesome thought and seems not only “do-able,” but it would make a big impact. I really think we will have to work on many fronts within arenas just like what you’ve proposed, and keep doing many things and looking at how things are working, then do more and more and more…as we work to create an inclusive workforce that…[Read more]
