Okay, gotcha. I do know that one of our Admins (Molly Comstock) in R3 made one of the core teams. I’m not as famiiliar w/the Admins from the other regions.

I remember thinking when the list originally came out that there was a good diversity of people represented on the core teams; and as I looked over the list today, I was even more imporessed. Check it out: https://inside.fws.gov/index.cfm/go/post/vision-core-teams-list.

I think this is a FANTASTIC step forward. I like you spent most my waking hours as a child, pre-teen and teenager outdoors. No matter if it was in the backyard, riding my bike or up in the mountains at the state park with my family. I have 4 children still at home and can [...]

Hey Folks, I have been reviewing the Vision document for about the 5th time and I’m convinced it is a good document. However, there is one section under ”Our Recommendations for Broading Workforce Inclusiveness” that I find a bit unsettleing. It is the line that states ”Double the number of minorities and people with disabilities….” Now, we just finished stateing that we will continue to hire the ”Best” and ”Brightest” for the FWS but this line falls back in to the ”Old” governement way of thinking that we need to meet some sort of ”Quota” with races to be an inclusive work force. That really sits sour with me knowing that a job I might apply for to gain ”Permenant” status could be taken by someone who is not as qualified but fills that quota regardless of race, color, creed etc. Diverse is good, but a line like that makes me think we are hiring just for the ”diversity quota system”

I agree with Mark that this metric is a little screwy. In addition to suggesting a quota system, this metric is really difficult to implement. For example, given our current application procedures, applicants do not identify their ethnicity on their application, and it’s impossible for hiring officials to know the ethnicity of [all/any/each of] their applicants. It seems unfair to our hiring officials to expect them to increase their staff diversity, while tying their hands on making those selections.

I also think that this metric does our diverse applicants an enormous disservice. At ”best,” it reinforces the misunderstanding that we have to somehow ”lower” our standards to attract diverse talent. At worst, it creates a hostile work environment where a culturally diverse individual is made to feel subpar (i.e. ”you only got this job because…”).

We need to change the metric, and reward field stations who create a culture for diversity. Instead of measuring success by how many diverse individuals we can bring on board, how about measuring success by the level of effort expended to foster diversity? How well does a field station recruit diverse talent? How well do they cultivate diverse talent (i.e. retain) at their location? I’d rather measure success qualitatively than quantitatively!

Well it has been very quite for awhile since they changed the format of the web site. Is the lack of Oration here due to that or have we lost our train of thought?
