I think it is important to recognize that our leaders are discouraged by our current business/leadership practices and employees are asked to do so many administrative tasks each day that they struggle to be positive and passionate about stewardship of refuges. I am finding it more and more difficult to find positive, big picture thinkers [...]

I love Phil’s comment about interpreting the past. I think it is vital to tell the human story when you tell the refuge story and it is a great way to celebrate community involvement. This can be done by naming roads and buildings after people, using common place names and local language or recognizing founders [...]

Kristine, I think what I feel is missing from the document is heart. When I read fulfilling the promise I am inspired by statements like “willdife come first” and the commitment to invest in the people dedicated to the Service mission. The documents leads with a discussion of the American character and connection to wild [...]

I think this is a great idea, although I personnally like the idea of creating new refuges and forming partnerships to creat and protect corridors. This suggestion reminds me of the ”Rappahannock model” Desiree and could be accomplished through careful landscape planning. Personally I don’t care who protects the land/habitat, as long as it is protected. Partners in conservation are a key to promoting conservation and integrating conservation into community planning and finally, to the lives of individuals.
I can’t tell you how many times I have heard an individual say that they hate the FWS but upon learning about easements or other protected areas that might benefit them, find commonality with us.

In reply to - Desiree Sorenson-Groves posted an update in the group Beyond The Boundaries : As the Refuge System embarks on a new conservation paradigm with new refuges and/or ”Conservation Areas” such as the Rocky Mt. Front, Flint Hills and Everglades Headwaters, should there be a new legislative definition about what these ”Conservation Areas” can be? And could that new definition [...] · View

I am concerned about how we approach office and visitor center greening. Shouldn’t our first goal be to blend into our environment, use the natural world to cool and heat our buildings and use the outside world to teach others about our organization and conservation message? I see large two story visitor centers that do [...]

It is important for land managers to live and work in the communities near refuges. Managers should be involved in community planning and education in a very direct way. Complexing has removed the land managers ability to make decisions on behalf of the refuge, with full and direct consideration of the communities needs and input. [...]
