One person contributed that leadeship to them meant personal growth. The service should allow for and encourage those types of opportunities.

“360″ Self Assessments provide opportunities for folks to get feedback from supervisors, peers, and staff they supervise. In some cases it can also allow for feedback from those outside the service (i.e. partners, friends, or other agencies.

Leadership Challenge is a training offered at NCTC and open to all employees at all levels. It’s only 3 days and has a great foundation/introduction to leadership. It was established partially to address the difficulties staff in the field may have due to childcare or mobility issues.

The service really needs to address barriers to leadership opportunities due to mobility or dual career households

Supervisors should be provided a budget to provide items such as books on leadership. They can then be shared by supervisors and provided to new employees or those on staff who are interested in more leadership opportunites, but may need help.

we need to hold supervisors responsible for having meaningful conversations with their employees about IDP (Individual Development Plans)

There are alot of employees who don’t know the breadth and depth of all the opportunities for lreadership that are out there. There needs to be a better communication tool to let the field know about their options.

Group also recommended we change the title, “Stepping Up” to Leadership, because it implies that it’s a steep learning curve.

Another table recommended empahasizing that anyone in any job series can take this training, for example there may be a janitor on station who may have the best leadership skills at the entire station.

We’re now asking the two table groups to report out. One suggestion so far was to introduce leadership development before folks get to the GS-11 level.
