As I reread this section and think about the America’s Great Outdoors report that just came out, I think we need to double check our recommendations and strategies to be certain that we are going to be doing our part in that effort. There is a great list of “Effective Partnerships and Programs” on page [...]

Hi all, I’ve been on the planning & design team and we’ve talked a lot about this exact topic. Great thoughts everyoone and I have to agree about our changing demographics and how it may affect the agricultural communities. In our team, we too felt that we had to recognize that we are just one [...]

Thank you, Kristin. I feel your struggle as I too tend to be a zapper and put my gut feelings out there, especially when it comes to things that I care deeply about, like land ethic and how the FWS fits into the overwhelming task of encouraging the development of a land ethic in the [...]

That is awesome! And thanks for posting photos. At work I do budget formulation for refuges, but in my off time I’m working on community gardens here in Anchorage. I want to meld my love of wildlife and wild things together in these garden projects. Thanks again for the Discovery Garden idea. I have some [...]

I like the idea of having places that children can return to. For instance, I grew up next to Mingo NWR. I love to go back to the boardwalk that I walked a million times as a young person. The changes in the management of the area and the subsequent changes in the plant species [...]

Hi Tracy,
Glad you too had a favorite place to return to ! I strongly believe that whenever possible, we need to create these kinds of places with children in mind. I think every Refuge should have a children’s ”WildWing” !
My Friends group in collaboration with our Refuge staff just completed the first phase of our children’s ”WildWing” on our Refuge. It is an observation deck over a fresh water pond that is built with both children’s safety needs and their natural curiosity in mind. It will be a place we use as a focal point to teach children about the environment of fresh water ponds. For us, it is a long-held dream come true!
My hope is that it will become a place children return to as adults because they spent time on it when they were young!
