Robert, thank you for posting here and for all the insights you’ve offered the Refuge System over the years.

I think it’s also important to have signs that let drivers know there are endangered animals crossing the road. So many times I’ve been on refuge land, in an area where I know endangered animals live, and there is no signage to let drivers know that they need to be extra alert.

I thoroughly enjoyed “Rosalie Edge, Hawk of Mercy: The Activist Who Saved Nature from the Conservationists.” The book is a refreshing biography about a woman who wasn’t afraid to act boldly to protect wildlife — and she wasn’t afraid to take on the powerful conservation groups and challenge their efforts. She was also the woman [...]

First, I want to thank all those who had a hand in writing these recommendations. I’m sure it was a lot of work. Others have mentioned that the document does not seem “bold” enough. I have to admit, it didn’t strike me as “bold” either, but then again, maybe the document is trying to be [...]

I agree the opening quote is not the “meat,” but it sets the tone for the document, which is why it’s at the very beginning. If an opening quote from the history of U.S. conservation is going to be used, it should be appropriate to the forward-thinking vision that this document hopes to develop.

I’m still reading through the draft and will have further comments, but I can’t get past my slight bewilderment with the opening quote: “Wild beasts and birds are by right not the property merely of the people who are alive today, but the property of unborn generations, whose belongings we have no right to squander.” [...]

We have a school program at Blackwater NWR that brings many Dorchester County school children out to the refuge as part of their school day. Our volunteers have learned that for many of the local kids, it’s their first trip to the refuge.

In reply to - Paul J. Baicich posted an update: Spent yesterday afternoon at the Eastern Shore (Maryland) with my friend, Vaughn Collins. We had a great time at Blackwater NWR, where, combined with nearby Cambridge, we had 11 duck species, 2 swan species, and 2 goose species. A waterfowl bonanza… It was also a great raptor day, with multiple [...] · View

I think Jimmy’s comments are valid. But something else I worry about are the arrangements where the FWS has less authority over the land and resources. In voluntary deals, where land is protected in ways other than by outright purchase by the government, I feel like there is the possibility that ranchers or other commercial [...]

Reading the discussions about social media and the Service reminded me of something I’d like to see changed in how the Service links to articles and press releases.

Often on Twitter and Facebook, the Service will post an entry with a link that leads to the home page of the FWS or related refuge website. Rather than linking directly to the press release or web page, they just place you on the home page.

The only problem with this approach is they’re forcing the user to search for the related item. Sometimes it’s easy to find and sometimes it’s not. Especially if the person is reading a Twitter or Facebook entry that’s a few days old. New items have since been put on the home pages and the item they’re looking for might no longer be easy to spot.

It would be nice if links to news items actually led directly to the related press release or web posting and not just to a home page. Make it easy for people to find the story that’s being highlighted — and they’ll be more likely to re-post the information in their own tweets, blogs and Facebook accounts.

Yes, I agree Lisa! Excellent recommendation.

I’ve pointed this out in my own region, and found that it’s typically an oversight. Because Twitter and Facebook have a limit on how many characters you can post to a feed, the full article’s web site frequently gets cut off. I agree it’s important to put this on the radar of the folks who are posting news feeds so they can take it into account when posting an article.

Thanks, Mark. That’s very interesting regarding getting your input heard. And I agree, we don’t need to be IT experts to offer valuable input on websites. We’re all consumers of the Internet (and FWS websites), so we have something to offer in the way of user feedback and suggestions for making the Refuge System websites [...]

In the vision document it states that we should “Ensure that every Refuge Website receives a level of attention commensurate with its status as the primary public face of the Refuge and the System, as well as the backbone of social media outreach efforts.” And Joanna also pointed out that social media cannot replace websites. I am so relieved to know that I am not alone in my beliefs about this matter. Thank you for sharing more detail about this and for all that you contribute in time and energy as a friend and volunteer.
